Mike Young is a senior member of Newpoint’s Affiliation Practice, where he provides advisory services on market strategy, governance, and the design and negotiation of M&A transactions. Prior to joining Newpoint, Mr. Young served as president and chief executive officer of central Pennsylvania’s PinnacleHealth System, where he engineered the simultaneous acquisition of four community hospitals and a merger with a Pittsburgh academic health system and its prominent health plan, forming UPMC Pinnacle.

Before coming to Pinnacle, Mike led the nationally-recognized turnaround of Grady Health, a financially troubled county system in Atlanta where he achieved a nearly $75 million improvement, reduced costs by nearly $20 million, and provided an additional $80 million in free care. He previously served as CEO of Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) in Buffalo, leading a $32 million turnaround that gave ECMC its first-ever operating gain. While in the course of that turnaround, a commission on statewide realignment had ordered ECMC to be taken over by a large system that planned close acute care hospital services at the facility. Instead, Young’s team negotiated a more balanced merger with that same system, which preserved and enhanced ECMC’s acute care service lines and allowed ECMC’s board chair to become the eventual CEO of the overall system.

Young earned his BS in Biology and MHA from the University of Pittsburgh and an Executive MBA from the Harvard Business School (Advanced Management Program). He has been a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives since 1994 and has mentored numerous CEOs throughout the United States.
